History

The educational system in Belgium has undergone many changes in the last century and in this one.

The long lasting dispute between Public Education, offered by state, provincial or local authorities, and Catholic Education (‘Schoolstrijd’ in Dutch) was put to rest by the 1958 ‘Schools Pact’, which officially acknowledged both systems. From the 1970’s, schools were selected for practical reasons rather than on religious or philosophical grounds. By special decree in 1989, State Education became Community Education and from then on, the educational system was gradually decentralised, with responsibility finally established in 2000 at regional level (school groups) and local level (schools). In 2007 ‘Community Education’ became ‘GO! Flemish Community Education’.
